Analysis Journal “Improving Reading Comprehension Skills through Reading Strategies Used by a Group of Foreign Language Learners”

Today, i want to share  my analysis of journal titled Improving Reading Comprehension Skills through Reading Strategies Used by a Group of Foreign Language Learners”.
In this post , i want to share about the author of the journal and the audience, the author’s main argument and author reasons for his/her argument, and the last is the reader’s point of view.

1.     1.  The author of this journal are:
-Nancy Gómez Torres
-Jhon Jairo Ávila Constain
That both of them are from University of Pontificia Bolivariana.
The audience can be a researchers, teachers, lecturers, educator, etc. In this journal, the subjects at the very beginning consisted of 50 second semester students majoring in business administration, economics, law, psychology, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, electronics engineering, agro-industrial engineering, social communication and journalism at a private university on the northwest coast of Colombia.

2.  2.     The author’s main argument an author reasons for his/her argument.
The pupose of this journal is to improve students’ reading comprehension skills in a foreign language. In order to to improve students’ reading comprehension skills in a foreign language, the author used some strategies that has been selected and adapted with the purpose of learning to support students’ efforts to read and comprehend texts as well as to train them to become proficient independent readers outside of the classroom.
The reason of the author’s main argument is some students at Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana, Monteria, present low reading comprehension and lack or inappropriate use of reading comprehension strategies which have caused low performance in both English and Spanish classes and on tests.

3.     3.   The reader’s point of view.
From my point of view, the author is care about student’s reading skill. So, the author did a research about how to improve reading comprehension skill. The school or university should find an effective strategy to teached reading comprehension to their student. It is because with using an effective strategy student can understand well and fastly. As the author said before that student in his/her university present low reading comprehension and lack or inappropriate use of reading comprehension . This problem happened because student get not enough knowledge of reading comprehension. So it’s influenced the student’s performance in English tests.

I think the things that i want to share have done, that’s all i can tell you about.

The Difficulties and The Eases of Reading International Journal and Indonesian Journal

Today, i'm going to share about The Difficulties and The Eases of Reading International Journal and Indonesian Journal. The title of international journal that i have read is The Use of Role Play to Improve Teaching Speaking by Arham R, Abdul Hakim Yassi and Burhanudin Arafah. From indonesian  journal that i have read the title is Peningkatan Keterampilan Menulis Paragraf Deskripsi Menggunakan Media Kartu Gambar Pada Siswa Kelas IV SD Negeri 5 Geneng Jepara by Titik Purwanti.


  • The Difficulties of Reading Indonesian and International Journal

From reading both of the journal of course i find the difficulties, especially in reading international journal that using english. Sometimes it's hard for me to understand the content of the journal because the journal use academic words that i don't know the meaning of the words. Beside that, i'm the kind of person that lazy to read something like a book or even a journal. So that's the reason why i find a lots of difficulties in reading international journal.


  • The Eases of Reading Indonesian and International Journal


In my opinion, the eases one is reading indonesian journal. Of course i understand well indonesian journal because my first language is indonesian. Even if i just read it once i can understand and catch what's the point of the journal. But in international journal i think that i should be often to read it, so i can increase my understanding in reading international journal.

The Analysis of Article Journal

Now, i would like to share about my analysis of article journal titled "The Use of Role Play to Improve Teaching Speaking" by Arham R, Abdul Hakim Yassi, and Burhanudin Arafah.

1. The Abstract
          From an article journal that i have read, i found that the researcher provided the purpose. (1) The nursing student's interest in learning English through Role Play for developing speaking skill; (2) The significance of  student's achievement in speaking performance after learning English through role play.  In the abstract there are also provided the method, the sample, the result and the keyword.

2. The Introduction
          In the introduction, the researcher mention the background of the article journal such as the background of English Speaking Skill, Developing Good Quality of Teaching and Role Play. In this case the writer proposes the study on "Implementing Role Play to Improve Nursing Students' Speaking Performance at Stikes Amanah Makassar.

3. The Research Method
-Research location and design
  This research took  place at STIKES Amanah Makassar. This research applied a quasi experimental study, that involves two groups, experimental group and control group.
-Population and Sample
  The population of this research were the nursing students at Stikes Amanah Makassar which the total population of nursing students in this academic year is 286 students, but the number of sample was  60 students.
-Data Collection
  In collecting data, there are three instruments that the researcher used: speaking, questionnaire, and interview.
-Data Analysis
  The students’ speaking performances were scored based on four aspects which are fluency, accuracy, pronunciation, and vocabulary.
-Research Findings
  The researcher found that the data collected through pre-test and post-test as shows that the students’performance of the two groups improves significantly.
-Students’ Response
  The data findings indicate that the highest rank of the mean score is 47% of strongly agree students. The second is 40,50 % agree students. There is 10,17 undecided, 1.3% disagree and 0.17 strongly disagree.

4. The Result and Discussion
          The result from the pre-test and post-test demonstrated a significant improvement in the quality of the student's speaking performance in the experimental class while the quality of student's speaking performance in control condition was slightly improved.  This implies that the students in both groups gained in the speaking performance, but those in the experimental condition gained more. It is indicated that role play as designed properly improves the students’ speaking performance significantly.

5. The Conclusion
          In the conclusion, the researcher stated "Role Play strategy is approved effective to improve students' interest to speak English in the  nursing classroom. The students who studied through role play show significant improvement in their speaking performance on the post test."

The Points In The Article Journal

I'm back!!
Well today i am going to share what are the points from an article journal that i have read.
Before i start to share it, i would like to share about what are the points that usually find in article journal which i have heard from my lecturer. an article journal usually have:
1. Title
2. Abstract
3. Introduction
4. Method
5. Result
6. Discussion
7. Conclusion
But, an article journal that i have read contains
-The first is title
-The second is abstract
-Next is introduction
-Then there is a research method
-After that is result and discussion
-The last but not the least is conclusion
-And of course there is also have a references

I think that's all the points in the article journal.

The Difficulties in Finding Research Journal

This time i would like to share about how do i find an article research.
The first is when i don't have the connection to the internet.
The second is when I already found the right article but it can be downloaded.
The last is sometimes to find the article, it waste many time to find the right article.

Abstract Review of Journal: The Use of Role Play to Improve Teaching Speaking

In this occasion i would like to share about the abstract from journal "The Use of Role Play to Improve Teaching Speaking"

What do you find in abstract?

  • This study aims to describe : (1) the nursing students’ interest in learning English through Role Play for developing speaking skill; and (2) the significance of  students’ achievement in speaking performance after learning English through role play.
  •  The data  of pre- test and post-test were analyzed using SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) with t-test and ANOVA (Analysis of Variance). 
  • The results reveal that the students have high interest in role play as indicated by 88,33 % of the students agree with the role as a learning method.

THE USE OF ROLE PLAY TO IMPROVE TEACHING SPEAKING

  • Role play is very important in teaching speaking because it gives students an opportunity to practice communicating in different social contexts and in different social roles. In addition, it also allows students to be creative and to put themselves in another person’s place for a while.  Role play is considered suitable for vocational classes that urge much direct learning for their profession.  Students are not only as passive learners but they become active learners since there are various activities that put them in an active process.
  • The research took  place at STIKES Amanah Makassar. It lasted for a month strating from in May 2012 – June 2012. This research applied a quasi experimental study, that involves two groups, experiemntal group and control group.
  • The result from the pre-test and post-test demonstrated a significant improvement in the quality of the students’ speaking performance in the experimental class while the quality of students’ speaking performance in control condition was slightly improved.
  • Based on the findings above, it shows that role play is an effective strategy to develop English speaking performance particularly students in vocational class or students in a specific need of English.
